Trump’s Immigration Plans Are
Already Wrecking the Food Industry
Jan 22

Fear of increased ICE raids have
already negatively affected the
nation’s agricultural sector,
causing alarm that food prices
could skyrocket in the near
future as a result of Donald
Trump’s aggressive immigration
policies.

Bakersfield, California, saw a
massive drop-off in the number
of field workers showing up for
work Tuesday while ICE agents in
unmarked Chevy Suburbans rounded
up and detained immigrants in
the area, profiling individuals
they believed to be field workers,
reported CalMatters. The end
result: acres of unpicked oranges
roasting in the California sun at
the height of the season.

Bakersfield makes up a small
portion of California’s Central
Valley, which produces
approximately a quarter of the
nation’s food. Kern County,
where Bakersfield is located,
has ranked within the top three
agricultural counties in the
nation for the last several
years, largely off the backs of
undocumented laborers, who are
estimated to comprise more than
half of the county’s workforce,
according to CalMatters.

Undocumented workers have been
targeted walking in and out of
gas stations, getting breakfast,
at Home Depot, or while driving
along the 99 Highway, leaving
many with no other option than
to simply stay at home.

“We’re in the middle of our
citrus harvesting,” Casey
Creamer, president of the
industry group California
Citrus Mutual, told CalMatters.
“This sent shockwaves through
the entire community. People
aren’t going to work and kids
aren’t going to school.
Yesterday about 25 percent
of the workforce, today 75
percent didn’t show up.”

It's laughable, if not predictable, that the party who continuously
whines about paying living wages, raising the minimum wage (which raise
prices), income inequality, etc. are advancing the narrative that
requires the employment of law breaking illegals at below minimum wage
in an effort to keep prices low. The duplicity and outright hypocrisy is
profound.

It is about money. Foreign migrants accept exploitation here
because it is higher wages than what they could get staying there.
California has passed laws against cruelty. Migrants can have a
decent life and send money to their families.

California has moved on from hate and vicious racism that keeps
goobers happy. California remains focussed on money. Did you
notice many of the Tech Bros are from California?

And grooving on the beach.

In other words, it is not "exploitation." It is them picking their best outcome
from what is available.

Grocery prices go up under Biden,
conservative outrage; grocery prices
go up under Trump, conservative silence.

Notwithstanding your dodging, how much have grocery prices gone up in
the 3 days that Trump has been in office?

Mechanical harvesters for almost everything
have already been invented ... farmers just
didn't wannna invest so long as they could
get lots of 'slave labor' from down south.

So, it's time. Have a co-op meeting.

Farmers are already using the cheapest
labor source available. If they have to pay
more per harvest guess who ultimately pays
for it?

The same people who pay for government driven increased corporate taxes,
increased regulations, increased minimum wages, etc. Where are your
complaints about those?
