Eating on $3 a Day: The Shame of the Food Stamp Program

By Randolph T Holhut
Created May 30 2007 - 12:02pm

DUMMERSTON, Vt. - The federal food stamp program has never been known as
being particularly generous, but the combination of budget cuts and
inflation has made it even less so.

For all the talk you hear from economists saying the "core rate" of
inflation is stable, you have to remember that the figure excludes two
things all of us have to buy - food and energy. A trip to the grocery store
or the gas station will tell you that prices are rising higher and faster
than the 3 percent inflation rate we hear about.

It's been 11 years since the food stamp program increased its benefits. It's
been a decade since the federal minimum wage has been increased. Meanwhile,
the price of everything has gone up and the poorest among us are the ones
who get squeezed the worst.

If you are poor enough to qualify for food stamps, the average benefit per
person is about $3 per day per person. That's $21 a week for food.

On $21 a week, your grocery basket will have lots of rice and pasta and not
much meat and dairy products or fresh fruits and vegetables. It is difficult
to nearly impossible to eat a healthy diet, and as food prices keep rising,
it gets even harder.

Recently, several members of the House Hunger Caucus, led by Reps. Jim
McGovern, D-Mass., and JoAnn Emerson, R-Mo., tried to raise awareness of the
issue by trying to eat for a week on the $21.

To some, it may have been just a political stunt, but the Hunger Caucus
wanted to dramatize just what poor families in America are going through.
They discovered what the poor know too well - that $3 a day doesn't go very
far. You can read more about McGovern's week on the food stamp diet at
foodstampchallenge.typepad.com.

The federal Farm Bill comes up for reauthorization this summer. Included in
that bill is the food stamp program, and McGovern and Emerson are calling
for an increase of $4 billion to the current $33 billion budget, which
covered 26 million recipients last year. That would translate into an
additional $48 a month for a family of four - not much, but better than
nothing.

More needs to be done so that more nutritious food is available through the
program. Education programs - to advise recipients about how to stretch
their food dollar and still eat healthy food - are also needed. Most of all,
the minimum wage needs to rise to the point where it is a living wage for
all workers.

"All of us in Congress live pretty good lives," McGovern told The Washington
Post. "We don't have to wake up worrying about the next meal. But there are
a lot of Americans who do. I think it's wrong. I think it's immoral that in
the U.S., the richest country in the world, people are hungry."

A truly just nation would ensure that no one goes hungry. Unfortunately,
there always seems to be money available for war, but Congress too often
cries poverty when more money for social welfare programs is sought. This is
simply not right.

There are no lobbyists for the poor in Washington. They don't write big
checks for politicians. They are all but invisible to our leaders. This must
change.

Its a complicated issue. Food stamsps have been used to buy sugar
cereals, junkfood, and soda, which produces kids whose mental
development has been so hindered that they are not useful to any
employer. Like with drugs, allergies, and chemical exposure, some gene
pools are more vulnerable than others, which is partly why some are so
plagued with addiction & violence.

As noble as the food stamp program was, the kids would be better off
if they starved to death rather than have a life with no future.

Your compassion is amazing. I suppose we should also build death
camps and gas chambers just like the
nazis used, huh? Of course, if you displayed at least some
intellegence in your reply, you would suggest
that we start cutting down on the bloat at the top, and that includes
corporate welfare, lavash jet trips for
gov't officials, and thre massive and costly corruption in gov't, so
maybe we could actualy afford to

Strangely enough....No. I've lost my job before, but I realized it
was always a possibility and took precautions. And I was never out of
a job long enough to get short on funds (see, that's what happens when

Those on food stamps don't seem to be having a problem...I mean, I was
behind a 'gentleman' with his wife and five children at Wally World,
all dressed nicely and the wife wearing abouit $10K worth of jewelry,
who paid for their two buggies of food with food stamps (now a EBT
card) and loaded them into a 2007 Cadillac Escalade with $8,000 rims.

Man, it's amazing the vehicles you can afford when you're 'poor' in

it could be that the Escalade wasn't his, but an friend's, but still,

Yes, it's good enough for me. You proved just the opposite of what you
stated. The food stamp program costs billions of dollars a year. So, you
showed a misuse that amounts to a nit. That is hardly WIDESPREAD. There is
absolutely no evidence that fraud is rampant in the food stamp, WIC, and SSI
programs. It's all in your little head.

Consider yourself lucky. The market isn't always so kind, and it's
defently unpredictable and unreliable.
Believe me, I've been there.

That's the exception, not the norm. The guy was probaly a gangster

with expensive after-market rims? Gangstamobile)

Man, it's amazing the vehicles you can afford when you're 'poor' in
America.
The guy was most likely a gangbanger, and gangbangers have no qualms
about welfare fraud. Of course,
it could be that the Escalade wasn't his, but an friend's, but still,
people on food stamps driving a car like that
is the exception, and not the norm. People who really need food stamps
wouldn't be driving such a vehicle.- Hide quoted text -
THAT'S the point. While it may not be the NORM, it is deffinitely
WIDESPREAD.

an estimated $241 million annually from food stamp benefits."-'The
Extent of Trafficking in the Food Stamp Program: 2002-2005' by the
USDA Food & Nutrition Service
Good enough for ya? This report did not include the fruad that is
also rampant in the WIC and SSI and other such programs.
Then you are a fool to ignore the obvious. But then you've already
demonstrated that.

What does being 'poor' mean in America?

"Some 41% of our poor own their own homes, with another 75% owning
automobiles and VCR sand two-thirds having air conditioning and
microwave ovens. Virtually all own telephones, refrigerators, and
television sets, all of which were once considered luxuries. The
average poor person in America has more living space and is more
likely to own a car and a dishwasher than the average European. What
passes for poor in America today would have passed for fantastically
wealthy in any other place or age."-The Politically Incorrect Guide to
American History by Thomas E. Woods Ph.D

There is way too much fraud, and I'm tired of my tax dollars being
wasted on it. All I ask for this a lot better regulation.
I'm tired of my tax dollars being spent in Iraq. I've learned to live with
it. You should do likewise.
Personally, the only problem I have about Iraq is the rules of
engagement. They should be harsher.
But, if you're tired of your tax dollars being 'wasted', why do you
'learn to live with it'? I work hard for my money and I don't
appreciate subsidizing people who are perfectly able to work. I'm
also tired of people who actually require assistence being refused
assistence because there are no funds left because of the people
robbing the system.
Taxes are the price we pay for civilization.
No shit, Sherlock. At what point in my post have I stated that I
don't recognize the need for taxes? You won't find it as it is not
there.

I do, on the other hand, demand that the taxes I pay (which I worked
hard for) be used in the most efficient way possible and there be
absolutely NO waste and fraud.

Here's a great idea. To acquire and keep my job, I am required to be
drug free and take a test demonstrating that fact. Thus I am required
to be drug free to generate those taxes I pay. Now I do see it as
being unduly burdensome to require that anyone RECEIVING my taxes be
tested to demonstrate that they, too, are drug free. I mean, that
would be only fair, right?

Got any problems with that?

More liberal lies & smears shot down in flames again . So easy to do , like
shooting democrats in a welfare line.

According to a CNN article dated July 16, 1999, the House voted earlier that
week to increase the next president's salary to $400,000, which means George
W. Bush, our 43rd president, makes twice as much as his predecessor,
President Clinton

Whats sad is that people automaticaly spew "lazy bum, get a job",
without even firing a single braincell to
think "gee, maybe people are having difficulties getting a job, with
having to compete with HB-1, outsourcing
,illegal immigrants, and companies who try to cut as many jobs as
possible to boost their bottom line."

Next, we just hired an H-1B at work, after going nuts trying to find a
local. If the schools didn't suck, and didn't keep turning out people
educated in that peesashit language Java, we could hire more locals.

It dosen't help matters much that there is a prevailing image out
there that you could end up
going to school for many years, rack up a huge debt, and end up saying
"do you want fries with that?".
Outsourcing and HB1 has done great damage to the image of IT as a
career.

What is this, Supply Side Economics? Again: If the schools were producing
high-tech workers, we'd hire them! I can deprogram a Java programmer in a
week, without reducing my own velocity.
