*5 Things You Might Not Think Are Racist, But Are*
by Mehak Anwar
Nov. 19, 2015

There are a variety of different ways race-based discrimination can manifest itself. But whether it's a hate crime or a racially-charged microagression, all forms of this kind of discrimination need to be called out for what they are -- that is, racism -- even when people say, do, or believe things they don't think are racist, but actually are. While not all racist acts may be committed consciously, that doesn't take away from the fact that they're racist in the first place. Developing an awareness of these sorts of acts is half the battle, though, so here's a good place to start.

People who experience racism are, obviously never, obligated to respond to or educate racists. As a brown woman who receives a good deal of racist and ignorant comments daily, however, I've personally grown enthusiastic about educating people to the best of my abilities when it comes to things that are not OK to say or do. I understand that racism and other forms of oppression are systemic and deeply rooted in culture, language, and history; furthermore, I also know it's problematic to assume that everyone has had the privilege of an education or access to a forum where these social factors are dismantled and discussed. Not everyone has had the opportunity to experience a diversity of viewpoints, and as such, I usually give someone the benefit of the doubt when they say something racist. Instead of assuming the worst about them, my strategy is to begin a discussion about it.

But regardless, saying racist things that you don't know are racist doesn't actually take away from the underlying racism of the statement itself -- which is why it's so important to understand that some things are just not OK to say or do. Here are five things you might not think are racist, but very much are.

1. Saying "I Don't See Color"

Of course, it's always a positive thing not to assign characteristics, stereotypes, or judgments based on race or skin color. However, when you refuse to acknowledge color at all, you're also refusing to acknowledge all the oppression certain groups of people face based on the color of their skin. By claiming yourself to be "colorblind," you're turning your back on the fact that police brutality disproportionately affects black people or that racial profiling at the airport happens mostly to brown people or people who fit the Western image of Middle Eastern or South Asian people. It's important to see color to understand and acknowledge race-driven injustice.

2. Saying "Making This a Race Issue Is Racist of You"

Sometimes when people say this, their underlying statement may really be, "Race is a social construct." This is absolutely true; the only reason the word has meaning is because society has prescribed it meaning. But while the idea of race may be socially constructed, the consequences of being a person of color in the United States and other countries are real. It's ridiculous to expect people of color to ignore racism and prejudiced behavior, even if they do believe race is socially constructed. If something is racist, making it a race issue is not being racist -- it's calling out the perpetuation of harmful ideas.

3. Arguing That It's Racist To Acknowledge That White Privilege Exists

White privilege exists. White people have white privilege. There is no systemic discrimination against white folks, which is why it is to say that white privilege exists is not racist. Oh, and by the way, no, the existence of things like BET don't indicate black or PoC privilege, because at the end of the day, the vast majority of television and media representation belongs to and is created by white people.

4. Claiming Racism Ended In the 1960s

Legislation that ended segregation and voting discrimination laws was wildly important, yes, and it was certainly a step in the right direction for the United States. However, to say that racism ended with the end of segregation is misguided for a few reasons: First, laws don't always translate to reality; and second, there are, unfortunately, many more ways of being racist than segregating pubic accommodations. Saying racism ended in the '60s is kind of like saying you're "don't see color" -- it's a failure to acknowledge hard truths.

5. Fetishizing or Discriminating Against Romantic or Sexual Partners Based on Race

First things first: Yes, it is OK to have a "type." You can be into bad girls and good boys; your criteria could just be "nice person to adventure with"; you can prefer to date someone who's really funny; and so on and so forth. None of those preferences are bad. It is, however, a problem to generalize groups of people based on skin color or race.

When someone says to me, "Sorry, I don't date Pakistani girls," what it's really saying -- whether the person knows it or not -- is "You're not worthy to date simply because of stereotypes I've associated with your culture," or "Your beauty doesn't fit white, Western standards, so there's no way I could be attracted to you," or "The thing that's wrong with you is your skin color." Similarly, fetishizing someone for their race is equally problematic: It, too, plays into stereotypes, implying that there's a specific way people of certain racial backgrounds are "supposed" to look or act. Fetishizing based on race also "others" people, as well as reduces them to an object or a sexual fantasy.

So let's just... not. We're all people, and we all deserve to be treated as such.

"thew author" (I don't do grammar and spelling flames unless the person is being completely ironic) used a word that has existed for years and even has a definition that is accepted in the psychological community...

https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/microaggressions-in-everyday-life/201011/microaggressions-more-just-race

"Microaggressions are the everyday verbal, nonverbal, and environmental slights, snubs, or insults, whether intentional or unintentional, which communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative messages to target persons based solely upon their marginalized group membership. In many cases, these hidden messages may invalidate the group identity or experiential reality of target persons, demean them on a personal or group level, communicate they are lesser human beings, suggest they do not belong with the majority group, threaten and intimidate, or relegate them to inferior status and treatment."

And it's also spelled right...

Yeah, psychologists. The same people who brought us ADD, ADHD, and PTSD,
then claim to be the only people who can "treat" those things.
Ranks right up there with religion: They invent a problem (sin), then
claim to be the only solution to that problem.

Political correctness is absurd.

So, you just dismiss any new science if it doesn't fit into your extremely narrow view of the world.

Just curious; at what time period does new knowledge of science cut off in your world view? Will you at least stipulate that the Earth revolves around the sun? When it comes to medical knowledge, do you still go to your barber for a bloodletting and will you take an aspirin when a headache comes on?

Um, no. I side with science. People who have learned everything that can be known so far and continue to study it know more than you or I.
I have twin nephews who are autistic. Thanks to science, they were able to get proper instruction and they are leading a fulfilling life. I suppose you would prefer they be locked in an institution for the rest of their lives.

This has nothing to do with political correctness.
Yes it does. It's not surprising you don't see it.
You're a fucking brain dead idiot. That I do see.
That's from Milt Shook, who is so ashamed of what he really is that he

That's hilarious, you irony-deficient sod.

Ya think?

I mean, how can you NOT laugh your ass off at someone who goes by the name "Steve Canyon" telling someone who uses their real name in here that THEY are "ashamed of who they are" and have to "pretend to be someone else."

There'd be no point to right wingers if any of them understood the concept of irony.

Maybe Milt could repair his rip with a paper clip like he claimed he
could repair his broken bicycle chain with a paper clip...

why don't you ask to see my speeding ticket, for going 62 in
a 35 mph zone -- on a bicycle.
Milt Shook
https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=en&hl=en#!original/alt.fan.rush-limbaugh/7G3oEpwqWSE/YmnH2zkmFeAJ

Canyon Note: Shook also claimed that he built his bike, but didn't know
what a chainring was.. and then Milt claimed he didn't know what a chainring was because he built his bike with a triple crankset... <LOL> and didn't know that a triple crankset has three chain rings....

I doubt that Shook has never even broken a chain.

But wait! then Shook claimed he'd broken a few dozen....<LOL>

Then the moron claimed he broke two one day, but fixed
it with a paper clip,

It just gets better and better.

Now Milt is claiming his bike had a flywheel...

...and Shook won't say what size chainring he used to go 62 MPH because a standard
size would require him to crank over 2,5 revolutions per second.

...and now Shook claims that his iphone can collect his bike's cadence (Pedal RPM)
without a sensing unit...

and now it's apparent that even with all the bicycle skills me claimed to have in order to build his own bicycle, he thought the "freewheel" was called a "flywheel."

It just gets better and better.

Bullshit. All psychological research leads to discovery. Do you honestly think a condition doesn't exist until researchers name it?

BTW, numbnuts, you're also LITERALLY wrong. ADHD and ADD were first identified in 1902 and PTSD has been around since the Civil War. Ever hear of "shell-shock"? That's PTSD.

Really. And yet, you just dismissed ADD, ADHD and PTSD as something brand new and made up, despite the fact that there have been hundreds, if not thousands of peer-reviewed studies featuring as many as millions of case studies. Peer-reviewed means that actual scientists are evaluating the use of the scientific method in each study. Therefore, you DO have an anti-scientific bone in your body. Lots of them, in fact.

Um, no. I always alter my view based on science. I used to have like views on psychological and psychiatric disorders, but then I had to read a lot of literature on it and realized that the problem was the doctors under-diagnosing and over-prescribing Ritalin, not the research on ADD and ADHD.

So, you just dismiss any new science if it doesn't fit into your extremely narrow view of the world.
They aren't science. They are terms invented for things people don't
like in order classify them as somehow ill, thereby requiring the psych
fields to "treat" them.
Some people have short attention spans and/or are hyper. That doesn't
make them mentally ill.
Oh. Well. Thanks for clearing it up.
I'll ignore the science of psychology and psychiatry and the centuries of study of the brain and the thousands of experiments and case studies that have been done, and I'll just go with your definition, even though you're an ignorant fool who has probably never even read a paper on this.
There has not been centuries of study regarding ADD, ADHD, or PTSD.
Those are all recent.
Bullshit. All psychological research leads to discovery. Do you honestly think a condition doesn't exist until researchers name it?
Is that what I said?

BTW, numbnuts, you're also LITERALLY wrong. ADHD and ADD were first identified in 1902 and PTSD has been around since the Civil War. Ever hear of "shell-shock"? That's PTSD.
PTSD is NOT shell shock.

A child can be diagnosed with PTSD after a car accident that kills his
parents. That's not shell shock. A woman can be diagnosed with PTSD
after being sexually assaulted, That's not shell shock.

despite the fact that there have been hundreds, if not thousands of peer-reviewed studies featuring as many as millions of case studies. Peer-reviewed means that actual scientists are evaluating the use of the scientific method in each study.
That's not what peer review means. Most psychological issues don't
adhere to the scientific method. It's not a hard science and isn't bound
by such things.

The following was widely-reported when the study was first released. I used the 'Slate' article because it was one of the most comprehensive.

*Internet Trolls Really Are Horrible People*

Narcissistic, Machiavellian, Psychopathic, and Sadistic
by Chris Mooney
February 14, 2014

In the past few years, the science of Internet trollology has made some strides. Last year, for instance, we learned that by hurling insults and inciting discord in online comment sections, so-called Internet trolls (who are frequently anonymous) have a polarizing effect on audiences, leading to politicization, rather than deeper understanding of scientific topics.

That's bad, but it's nothing compared with what a new psychology paper has to say about the personalities of trolls themselves. The research, conducted by Erin Buckels of the University of Manitoba and two colleagues, sought to directly investigate whether people who engage in trolling are characterized by personality traits that fall in the so-called Dark Tetrad: Machiavellianism (willingness to manipulate and deceive others), narcissism (egotism and self-obsession), psychopathy (the lack of remorse and empathy), and sadism (pleasure in the suffering of others).

It is hard to overplay the results: The study found correlations, sometimes quite significant, between these traits and trolling behavior. What's more, it also found a relationship between all Dark Tetrad traits (except for narcissism) and the overall time that an individual spent, per day, commenting on the Internet.

In the study, trolls were identified in a variety of ways. One was by simply asking survey participants what they "enjoyed doing most" when on online comment sites, offering five options: "debating issues that are important to you," "chatting with others," "making new friends," "trolling others," and "other." Here's how different responses about these Internet commenting preferences matched up with responses to questions designed to identify Dark Tetrad traits: 2

To be sure, only 5.6 percent of survey respondents actually specified that they enjoyed "trolling." By contrast, 41.3 percent of Internet users were "non-commenters," meaning they didn't like engaging online at all. So trolls are, as has often been suspected, a minority of online commenters, and an even smaller minority of overall Internet users.

The researchers conducted multiple studies, using samples from Amazon's Mechanical Turk but also of college students, to try to understand why the act of trolling seems to attract this type of personality. They even constructed their own survey instrument, which they dubbed the Global Assessment of Internet Trolling, or GAIT, containing the following items:

* I have sent people to shock websites for the lulz.

* I like to troll people in forums or the comments section of websites.

* I enjoy griefing [http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=griefing] other players in multiplayer games.

* The more beautiful and pure a thing is, the more satisfying it is to corrupt.

Yes, some people actually say they agree with such statements. And again, doing so was correlated with sadism in its various forms, with psychopathy, and with Machiavellianism. Overall, the authors found that the relationship between sadism and trolling was the strongest, and that indeed, sadists appear to troll because they find it pleasurable. "Both trolls and sadists feel sadistic glee at the distress of others," they wrote. "Sadists just want to have fun ... and the Internet is their playground!" 3

The study comes as websites, particularly at major media outlets, are increasingly weighing steps to rein in trollish behavior. Last year Popular Science did away with its comments sections completely, citing research on the deleterious effects of trolling, and YouTube also took measures to rein in trolling.

But study author Buckels actually isn't sure that fix is a realistic one. "Because the behaviors are intrinsically motivating for sadists, comment moderators will likely have a difficult time curbing trolling with punishments (e.g., banning users)," she said by email. "Ultimately, the allure of trolling may be too strong for sadists, who presumably have limited opportunities to express their sadistic interests in a socially-desirable manner

*5 Things You Might Not Think Are Racist, But Are*
by Mehak Anwar
Nov. 19, 2015
Who the hell is Mehak Anwar. I found one on the internet, a rather pretty young woman with skin as light as my Irish aunt, "I am a rising professional with a passion for digital marketing and social media strategy. I'm currently pursuing a Master of Science degree in Marketing from Johns Hopkins University." find her here: http://www.mehakanwar.com/
Post by Tom Sr.
My mind isn't your playground and what you create in you own imagination isn't either fault or my error. "Microagression" is a ridiculous term invented to describe things of such little significance that no one not pathologically sensitive or imaginative would notice them.
Post by Tom Sr.
People who experience racism are, obviously never, obligated to respond to or educate racists. As a brown woman who receives a good deal of racist and ignorant comments daily, however, I've personally grown enthusiastic about educating people to the best of my abilities when it comes to things that are not OK to say or do.
Who in the hell is this person "to educate" anyone, you pompous adolescent? If anything or anyone is being arrogant and aggressive, and not in a particularly micro way, it's little Miss Brown martyr.
Post by Tom Sr.
That's big of you. A shame you don't start by defining "racism." To most sane people "racism" is the belief that some other race is inferior in some way, perhaps in all ways. Let's see what you have to say about it.
Post by Tom Sr.
But regardless, saying racist things that you don't know are racist doesn't actually take away from the underlying racism of the statement itself -- which is why it's so important to understand that some things are just not OK to say or do. Here are five things you might not think are racist, but very much are.
Oh, so we're too "inferior" to realize in come conscious manner how racist we really are? Isn't that a bit racist in itself?
Post by Tom Sr.
Utter horseshit. I've worked with scores of Black people and, in truth, when you're working with colleagues you really don't see their color. That doesn't mean you're not conscious of the fact that some of them had a hard climb up from where they began. As for oppression, it's damn hard to relate oppression to a colleague who's earning close to $200,000 per year and who's kid drives a BMW. You're the one being racist here, assuming all "people of color" -- really meaning Black people -- are incapable of rising above the "oppression" of communities in which over 70% of the children are born to unwed mothers, and 25 to 30% pf the males are unemployed and have prison records.

Except that all said above is a complete and utter lie, a gross exaggeration. In fact, the United States, with its infinite sensitivity to racial profiling does itself an enormous disservice by not paying special attention to people from the Middle East at security checkpoints.
Post by Tom Sr.
This is cute, you begin by making a statement and continue by not responding to it and instead creating a strawman argument about race being a social construct. No, honeybunch, when people say "Making it a race issue is racist of you," they mean blaming all the self-induced problems of Blacks on Whites and accusing white people in general of being "racist" is a racist comment; it's tarring everyone, innocent and guilty with the same brush.
Post by Tom Sr.
"White privilege" is an utterly meaningless phrase. It's merely an excuse for Black failure. Hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese (you know, South Asian people of color) migrated to this country with absolutely nothing and in the years since that migration began have joined the ranks of the most affluent, best educated and most entrepreneurial groups in the United States. But then, Vietnamese girls aren't dropping babies here and there, and Vietnamese families stay together, pool their resources and support one another. They also respect the power of education and while they extoll their own culture they also respect the broader culture of the United States. They certainly don't dwell on their frustrations, and they sure as hell don't idolize criminals or excuse them.
Post by Tom Sr.
Another Strawman. I don't know of anyone who claims racism ended in the 1960s. Certainly this article, which drips with pompousness and racism is indicative of that.
Post by Tom Sr.
You mean the way you generalize about White people?
Post by Tom Sr.
When someone says to me, "Sorry, I don't date Pakistani girls," what it's really saying -- whether the person knows it or not -- is "You're not worthy to date simply because of stereotypes I've associated with your culture," or "Your beauty doesn't fit white, Western standards, so there's no way I could be attracted to you," or "The thing that's wrong with you is your skin color."
?????? This is too stupid to warrant a reply.

Similarly, fetishizing someone for their race is equally problematic: It, too, plays into stereotypes, implying that there's a specific way people of certain racial backgrounds are "supposed" to look or act. Fetishizing based on race also "others" people, as well as reduces them to an object or a sexual fantasy.

Look up the word fetish, you moron. You're using it incorrectly.
Post by Tom Sr.
So let's just... not. We're all people, and we all deserve to be treated as such.
----------------
White people, too. Get to know some. You'd be surprised at how nice they can be.

If they could do it, why not your roommate?
Are you *really* that Stupid?
If Will Smith is a multi-million dollar actor, Wexford, why are not you as well?
It is frightening how many people simply have no concept of what "white privilege" is. I see it a lot on the far left, too. They don't get that it has nothing to do with money or success...

"White privilege" is this:

You and your black female roommate share an apartment, but there is a likelihood the landlord checked her credit and background a lot more closely.

When you and your black roommate leave your apartment to hail a cab, you'll get the first available one, and she'll have to wait a bit, which can suck on a snowy Boston day.

When each of you goes into a local restaurant, you'll be seated more quickly.

When each of you goes to buy a car, she'll likely pay a little more in interest and have to pay a little more.

When you each drive through the city, you'll only get stopped if you do something boneheaded. She'll just get stopped.

When each of you walks down the street, you'll be invisible to police and she won't be at all.

When each of you walks into a department store, the security idiot in the booth will follow her everywhere she goes. They won't look at you unless you DO something suspicious.

Will Smith is still black and everything he does is still subject to greater scrutiny than any white person. That's what needs to change.

Yeah, like the fear of getting good grades and getting called "white."
For shame...

The hell they aren't. Do they happen every time? No. But then, I didn't say they'd happen every single time, did I? If there are two people waving a taxi on most city streets and one is black and the other is white, the taxi will almost always stop for the white person.

Police routinely stop black people for black people in a white neighborhood because they assume they're there to cause trouble. Of course, they'll also stop a white guy in a black neighborhood, out of fear for the white guy's safety. And if you think black people are ever invisible to police, you're living in a dream world. And after many years in retail, in the last retail store I worked in, I WATCHED as a group of white shoplifters repeatedly sent in a group of black accomplices to divert attention, as the white people robbed the store blind. They will ALWAYS look at blacks and Latinos.

Do they happen every time? No. But I didn't say they happen every time. The odds are daunting, though. It almost always happens.

Really? I'd have to go back 30 years to count three traffic stops, I've had one single ticket in my life and I have never been asked to get out of my car.

When I lived in LA many years ago, in the early 80s, a black friend of mine, my Chinese girlfriend. my white friend Keith and I used to regularly drive to Tijuana to get Corona, which was sold for $1 per case back then. (It's shitty beer; not sure why people pay more now...). Every time we went over the border, Keith and I would just walk back over and we'd have to wait a good 5-10 minutes for the other two.

I know the Young Turks is biased and Uyger is a narcissistic asshole. I'm talking about the selfies. Three times in seven weeks is pretty remarkable. A couple years ago, he and Jerry Seinfeld were pulled over when recording Seinfeld's online TV show.

And no tickets, by the way... which would indicate they weren't after him for anything he DID. And like most people, even NJ police can learn. They probably know which car is his and they avoid it to keep themselves off the news.

You do realize it's illegal (not to mention unconstitutional) for police to stop someone without cause, right?

Milt presents some more of his imaginary friends... he thinks his
fantasies help support his nonsense claims....

why don't you ask to see my speeding ticket, for going 62 in
a 35 mph zone -- on a bicycle.
Milt Shook
https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=en&hl=en#!original/alt.fan.rush-limbaugh/7G3oEpwqWSE/YmnH2zkmFeAJ

Most black people don't have to deal with it either.

If they could do it, why not your roommate?
Are you *really* that Stupid?
If Will Smith is a multi-million dollar actor, Wexford, why are
not you as well?
It is frightening how many people simply have no concept of what
"white privilege" is. I see it a lot on the far left, too. They
don't get that it has nothing to do with money or success...
You and your black female roommate share an apartment, but there
is a likelihood the landlord checked her credit and background a
lot more closely.
When you and your black roommate leave your apartment to hail a
cab, you'll get the first available one, and she'll have to wait
a bit, which can suck on a snowy Boston day.
When each of you goes into a local restaurant, you'll be seated more quickly.
When each of you goes to buy a car, she'll likely pay a little
more in interest and have to pay a little more.
When you each drive through the city, you'll only get stopped if
you do something boneheaded. She'll just get stopped.
When each of you walks down the street, you'll be invisible to
police and she won't be at all.
When each of you walks into a department store, the security
idiot in the booth will follow her everywhere she goes. They
won't look at you unless you DO something suspicious.
Will Smith is still black and everything he does is still
subject to greater scrutiny than any white person. That's what
needs to change.
Nothing you wrote above is a universal truth.
Never said it was.
"you'll get the first available one, and she'll have to wait a bit"
"She'll just get stopped"
"you'll be invisible to police and she won't be at all"
"the security idiot in the booth will follow her everywhere she goes"
None of those claims leave any wiggle room. You stated them as facts,
which they are not.
The hell they aren't. Do they happen every time? No. But then, I
didn't say they'd happen every single time, did I? If there are two
people waving a taxi on most city streets and one is black and the
other is white, the taxi will almost always stop for the white person.
Police routinely stop black people for black people in a white
neighborhood because they assume they're there to cause trouble. Of
course, they'll also stop a white guy in a black neighborhood, out
of fear for the white guy's safety. And if you think black people
are ever invisible to police, you're living in a dream world. And
after many years in retail, in the last retail store I worked in, I
WATCHED as a group of white shoplifters repeatedly sent in a group
of black accomplices to divert attention, as the white people robbed
the store blind. They will ALWAYS look at blacks and Latinos.
Do they happen every time? No. But I didn't say they happen every
time. The odds are daunting, though. It almost always happens.

Actually, it depends more on the location and the way people are
dressed... Most taxis would rather pick up a black man with a nice
suit and tie than a loser in a dirty sweatshirt and a backward hat..

The white privilege thing is total nonsense....

That means, if the store owner stopped me from exercising my First
Amendment rights, and I petition the government for redress, and the
judge DOES NOT issue any sort of order stopping the store owner from
repeating his actions, he would be effectively abridging my right to
free speech.

of Rights only protects you from the government. That's insane. That
means, if a mercenary decides to take over your house, you're screwed,
because they're not the government. In reality, you can shoot them.
Where did that come from? The government works in a lot of ways. If
someone does something to violate your right to free speech -- REALLY
violate it, not just cancel a contract or refuse to spend money to put
out your album, you take them to court. If the judge decides your free
speech rights were violated by that person, you win. Why, you ask?
Because to rule otherwise would violate the First Amendment.

I'm not talking about Will Smith, and you damn well know that. I'm talking about people like my black next-door neighbor who makes a damn good living as a real estate marketing consultant, and about the large number of blacks I've known who, through guts and hard work, earned college degrees and graduate degrees, worked hard in the office and climbed up through the ranks. I worked with black people who were the first in their families not only to graduate from college but to finish high school and as a result were earning six figure salaries, some of them married to black spouses who also earned similar salaries. I know literally hundreds of Vietnamese who were dumped in this country with NOTHING, thrown into welfare housing and projects but who used their brains and hard work to claw their way out of their circumstances and do extremely well.

The Blacks and Vietnamese and others who do well are able to do it because their families were stable, their children were born to married couples who stayed together, and because they "went whitey" worked hard, led honest lives and played the game according to its rules. When white people do nothing but cry over the desperation of people who made stupid, impulsive decisions, bore children from several different absentee fathers, dropped out of school, joined gangs and wound up in prison, they're helping NO ONE. Turning away and saying that Blacks don't need better community leadership and it's OK if they dwell on imaginary racism but shouldn't try to go whitey by leading decent, organized lives, is an evil, nasty, racist thing in itself.

If they could do it, why not your roommate?
Are you *really* that Stupid?
If Will Smith is a multi-million dollar actor, Wexford, why are not you as well?
Has Will Smith always been a rich actor?
Since his acting career began with Fresh Prince and that show made a shitload of money for him, then hr went on to make Independence day and Men in Black, I guess yeah, the rest is history and he's been filthy rich the whole time.
In other words you are totally unaware that Smith did not grow up wealthy.

well, neither did you, Shook, but look at you now, begging for your

Remember that Milt Shook incorrectly and stupidly argues

Hartung's point is to be yet another idiot that completely blows off your main point to find a little "nugget" so he can "win."

NOTE: Hartung has YET to address the FACT that the writer of the article he posted that start this topic took what Smith said OUT-OF-CONTEXT.

Yet again, Hartung allowed himself to be *manipulated* by the far-right-wing-bias "news" media.

Yet again, Hartung failed to do even the *slightest* bit of research or fact-checking on an article's claims *BEFORE* he posted it.

Yet again, Hartung will NOT admit HE fucked-up.

As if Will Smith lives a Life like the vast majority of people of color in America.
--
And you do?
I lived in a predominately black area of Boston for many years -- along with a black, female roommate -- whose family lived nearby -- who was 20 years older than I.
I also know that a multi-millionaire black movie star is NOT going to be living the same life my black, female roommate was.
The point is moot, anyway because Smith's next line after that in the original interview -- "missed" by the idiots at Breitbart, who rightfully assume their readers won't actually click on the links and check the facts -- was the following:

The NEXT LINE in the original interview?

Have you come in contact with it?

SMITH Oh, God, yes. Yeah, absolutely.

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/features/will-smith-mark-ruffalo-four-842621

IOW, even Will Smith has encountered racism.

BTW, racism IS relatively rare these days. The issue is, there is still institutional racism and it has to be unacceptable.

1. No one has ever said it isn't rare. I mean, DUH. In fact, racism only sticks out like a sore thumb because it's become the exception, whereas it used to be the rule.

2. The NEXT LINE in the original interview?

Which is exactly WHY Hartung *continues* to use it as a source.

I have been tempted to list like the last 20 or so of Hartung's "news" sources and compare those with mine -- simply because I have noticed Hartung uses the same few sources over and over again -- while I use a very wide-range of sources.

(This is because, I think, I read Google News which is constantly offering an ever-changing wide variety of news events from a huge variety of sources -- whereas Hartung just uses the same few far-right "news" media sources over and over again.)

What I find fascinating is, all I do with most of the articles he cites is, I go into the article, find the original source of the information and I pretty much always find that they've left out something that completely changes the point of the article, and he still doesn't think to look at that.

I do that with everything -- okay, I'm not perfect, so I do it with almost everything. I read something I like and I look around and check to see if it's valid before I post it somewhere. I generally don't just say, "Oh, that's very liberal and I agree with it, so I'll use it to reinforce my opinion." I look to see if it's valid. It's not a difficult thing to do, of course, but it means that sometimes I can't use a news story I agree withand wish was real.

Of course, I'm not a wingnut.

Not likely considering....

Depends on which [Bloom fuel cell] Box you use. I agree the 60 minutes report is
sketchy, but one of them runs on oxygen -- the one they're touting
most highly and the one that powers Google and FedEx simply uses
oxygen.

1. No one has ever said it isn't rare. I mean, DUH. In fact, racism only sticks out like a sore thumb because it's become the exception, whereas it used to be the rule.

No one has said racism isn't rare. But rare isn't good enough; it has to be absolutely unacceptable, like two people in church stripping off their clothes and having sex on the altar. It has to be absolutely unacceptable.

Anyone who lives in a multi-ethnic environment experiences racism, even
back against whit racism.
Blacks literally CANNOT be racist towards whites. They can be prejudiced and many are. But they don't have the power to be racist.
They most certainly do.
Your attitude is a large part of the reason why the situation will never
improve in the manner you wish.
You hinder your own goals and aren't even intelligent enough to see it.
My own goals?
I'm white. I have nothing to complain about. I have no reason to claim blacks can't be racist; I get to keep my white privilege no matter what. Blacks don't have the power to be racist here. Perhaps in some parts of Africa, but not here.
Milt demonstrates the nonsense of white privilege.. He's white, but
he lives in a tiny rented room in a single wide, buys groceries with
a snap card, and has his health insurance subsidized. If there such a

Blacks don't have the power to be racist here. Perhaps in some parts of Africa, but not here.
Of course they do.

*Two [White] Men Arrested in Shooting of Black Lives Matter Protesters in Minneapolis*

MINNEAPOLIS -- Simmering racial tensions boiled over yet again Monday night when several men shot five people who had been protesting the recent police killing of an African American man in Minneapolis. Police on Tuesday afternoon said they had arrested two suspects and were seeking others.

On Monday night, five people suffered non-life-threatening gunshot injuries when at least one person opened fire on a crowd outside the Minneapolis Police Department's 4th Precinct building, authorities said. Afterward, police said they were searching for "3 white male suspects" who fled the scene.

By Tuesday afternoon, police said they had arrested a 32-year-old Hispanic man in South Minneapolis and a 23-year-old white man in nearby Bloomington. The suspects were not identified and no other details were released.

"We are sparing no efforts to bring any and all those responsible to justice," Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges (D) said on social media, where she called the shooting "abhorrent."

Protesters have been camping out in front of the 4th Precinct since Nov. 15, when two Minneapolis police officers were involved in the contentious killing of 24-year-old Jamar Clark.

"Tonight, white supremacists attacked the #4thPrecinctShutDown in an act of domestic terrorism," Black Lives Matter Minneapolis said on Facebook. "We won't be intimidated."

Although Clark's family called for an end to the protests after the recent shooting, Black Lives Matter Minneapolis vowed to return to the 4th Precinct on Tuesday for another demonstration. Throughout the morning, protesters continued to gather outside the police station.

Federal authorities said Tuesday that they knew about the shooting and were working with local police during the investigation.

"The Department of Justice is aware of the incident and is coordinating with the Minneapolis Police Department to assess the evidence and determine if federal action is appropriate," the department said in a statement.

About 10:40 p.m. Monday, police responded to the scene, about one block from the police station. Soon, 911 calls started to pour in, police said.

A video from a journalist at the scene showed people fleeing, then screaming for an ambulance. A young African American man was seen writhing in pain with an apparent gunshot wound to the leg while fellow protesters -- then police and paramedics -- tried to help.

Henry Habu, a nearby resident, said he was there during the shooting.

Habu said there were three men and a woman in ski masks who were filming the demonstrations. One witness reported seeing three men in masks; another reported one. Still, when protesters asked them who they were and why they were filming, Habu said, they deflected the questions.

Several people involved in the demonstrations -- including a Black Lives Matter organizer and the NAACP Minneapolis chapter president -- have called the alleged gunmen white supremacists. Authorities, however, have not confirmed those claims.

Habu said the outsiders appeared to fit the description of white supremacists whom protesters had been told to watch out for -- those wearing masks or camouflage clothing. He said that at one point, those who were wearing masks walked away, and some protesters followed them.

"They tried to fight," he said. "There was a scuffle."

Carrie Brown and several other older members in the community said they tried to defuse the situation.

"One of the white protesters who had been with us since the beginning said, 'Be careful, those guys are white supremacists,'" Brown said, referring to the three men and one woman in balaclavas. "We asked them to remove their masks, asked who they were, invited them to come and protest with us peacefully once they did that."

"One of our young men reached out and touched one of them and said, 'Oh he has a vest on' like a bulletproof vest," she added.

One witness, who did not want be named, was among those who followed the outsiders up the street.

"About midway down the block the group sort of thinned out and I said, 'Maybe we should turn around, not make them feel like we're all up on them,' and the minute I turned around I heard four shots," he said. "One whizzed right by me. I was going to get down but then I just ran."

Habu said shots rang out and he saw people disperse, running back to the demonstration camp.

Brown said she heard about 15 shots and, when she turned around, "four boys on the ground." She said she tended to one who had been shot in the leg.

"He just kept saying, 'Don't leave me, don't leave me,'" she said.

Several witness said police used pepper spray on those who were trying to help -- apparently to get protesters away from the victims so that medical personnel could reach them. Brown said an officer put a gun to her face and told her to move back.

"I couldn't move," she said. "He [the gunshot victim] had his hands wrapped around me. They pried his hands off of me."

Three victims were transported to North Memorial Medical Center, police said, and two others were transported to the Hennepin County Medical Center. Police described the injuries as not life-threatening.

Nekima Levy-Pounds, president of the Minneapolis chapter of the NAACP, returned to the scene after the shooting incident.

"I am obviously appalled that white supremacists would open fire on nonviolent, peaceful protesters," she told the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Rep. Keith Ellison (D), who represents the area in Congress and has supported the demonstrators, spoke out about the shooting.

"I don't want to perpetuate rumor," he said, according to Minnesota Public Radio. "I'd rather just try to get the facts out. That's a better way to go. I know there's a lot of speculation as to who these people were. And they well could have been, I'm not trying to say they weren't white supremacists. But I just haven't been able to piece together enough information to say with any real clarity."

The shooting occurred the night before the one-year anniversary of a Missouri grand jury's decision against indicting white Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson in the fatal shooting of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown. That decision helped reignite powerful frustration about the way African Americans are treated by police.

In Minneapolis, protesters have been camping out in front of the 4th Precinct since Nov. 15, when two Minneapolis police officers were involved in the contentious killing of Clark.

Authorities said officers were responding to a call for help from paramedics, who said Clark was interrupting their attempts to help an assault victim. Clark, who was unarmed, was also a suspect in the assault, police said.

"At some point during an altercation that ensued between the officers and the individual, an officer discharged his weapon, striking the individual," the state Department of Public Safety said in a Nov. 17 statement.

Clark died in a hospital a day after being shot.

Even before his death, however, his shooting was already causing outrage. Several witnesses claimed that Clark was handcuffed at the time of the fatal shooting, although police claimed otherwise. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety's Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is now investigating the shooting at the request of MPD.

As protests gained strength last week, Hodges, the mayor, also asked the Justice Department to open a federal civil rights investigation into the shooting.

Both Black Lives Matter organizers and the Minneapolis NAACP have called on authorities to release video of the shooting.

But Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton (D) said Monday that video footage taken from an ambulance at the scene was inconclusive. Dayton, who met with protesters and Clark's family on Saturday, said he has urged federal investigators to release the tapes as soon as possible.

Although largely peaceful, the demonstrations have been disrupted by several other incidents. More than 50 protesters were arrested on Nov. 16 after they shut down a highway. And on Friday, police announced they had arrested two men for spray-painting profanity on the 4th Precinct's walls.

After Monday night's shooting, Clark's family has thanked protesters for their "incredible support" but said demonstrations outside the police station should stop.

"Thank you to the community for the incredible support you have shown for our family in this difficult time," Clark's brother, Eddie Sutton, said in a statement. "We appreciate Black Lives Matter for holding it down and keeping the protests peaceful.

"But in light of tonight's shootings, the family feels out of imminent concern for the safety of the occupiers, we must get the occupation of the 4th precinct ended onto the next step."

DeResha Jackson, who grew up in Minneapolis and is now raising her children there, said she wants to see progress in the wake of Clark's death.

"I don't want my children to be subject to this. It's difficult for me to have to explain or know how to explain all of this in a way that they can understand," she said about the killing. "I don't want my boys to go through what our black men go through."

"My history and my child's history shouldn't be the same," she added. "There should be some progress."

No one has said racism isn't rare. But rare isn't good enough; it has to be absolutely unacceptable, like two people in church stripping off their clothes and having sex on the altar. It has to be absolutely unacceptable.

So says Milt Shook who also says:

communicating with the GPS device to tell you where you are. It's not
possible to do that by simply receiving a signal; it has to send one,

Bullshit. Just bullshit from start to finish. Leonard Jeffries is a
filthy racist just as sure as there's shit in a goat.

Leftists have long tried this "racism requires power" bullshit, and it
has been completely demolished.

Sure, racism is actually rare - for blacks who make millions of dollars. Strip away those millions from him and he'd be looked at by white racist America as no different than other street thug blacks. Funny how whites don't encounter any racism whether they're rich or poor.
