Indexes like this are a sham, I told you.
Look at who funds them and how they're designed.
<http://www.unz.com/akarlin/russia-doing-business-2016/>

.. Whenever Russia's scores on such indices begin to unfathomly climb a bit
too high for comfort, there are inevitably calls for them to be erased and
replaced with other indices.
This is a familiar phenomenon. For instance, when Transparency International's
Global Corruption Barometer 2013 appeared to indicate that incidences of
bribery had recently plummeted in Russia <http://qr.de/7Xd> to levels
resembling those of the more corrupt First World nations (as opposed to
typical levels of other middle-income countries) they opted to not release
them at all due to not having "confidence in the reliability of the data."

...

Not only 'indexes' but a more extensive system or rules, regulations and
principles in the 'Western world' is largely a sham that in no way represents
'universal values', but persists only as long as it is beneficial for the main
its beneficiaries, starting from the US. Another example is, the fact that IMF
has willingly changed its rules solely to allow the post-coup Kiev regime not
to pay Ukraine's debt to Russia but to to preserve Kiev's ability to continue
to borrow from IMF (read more here <http://migre.me/rZCTw>). This is what I
said at the beginning of the Ukraine crisis: 'the West', at least in the
economical sense, is rather a gang of avid cheaters.

Democracy in Ukraine: Dead on Arrival
Recent elections in the country merely reconfirm that Ukraine is now a failed
state; wrecked by extremism backed by Western meddling

Michael Lehner (Neo Presse <http://bit.ly/1MMikHW> (in German))

The elections in local communities in Ukraine (except the "separatist" Donbass
Region), which took place on October 25th provide a good opportunity for a
health and reality check of the democracy in this country. The expected has
happened - the deeply unpopular governing alliance of President Petro
Poroshenko actually suffered a humiliating defeat.

Prime Minister Arsenij Yatsenyuk, whose popularity polls are below 20% did
make a clever chess move when he overtly rejected participation in the local
elections. It is perfectly clear that the Ukrainian government in Kiev, which
was brought into power by the West, is not capable of gaining traction and
remains deeply unpopular.

Put in simple words, a corrupt, decrepit government of oligarchs installed by
oligarchs did replace a previous corrupt and decrepit regime of oligarchs. The
conditions for Russia to conduct a "color revolution" in Kiev would be there,
if Moscow wanted it. But the (post-soviet) Russia is not in the regime change
and "colour revolution" business and leaves this monopoly to the United States
of America.

The surprising part of last Sunday's election in Ukraine is the fact that the
alliance of the former president Victor Yanukovich (which was toppled by a
western-backed coup in february last year) could hold on to its base in the
south and east. A particularly embarrassing rebuff for the ruling government
in Kiev, especially for Poroshenko's compatriot Mikhail Saakashvili (another
descendant of another colour revolution), who lost the election in the
southern harbor city of Odessa. The elections in the southern harbour town
Mariupol were cancelled due to inappropriate conditions.

All in all, Ukraine remains divided into two almost equally sized parts - the
western and central regions, which are pro-West and the eastern and southern
regions, which are pro-Russian. Twenty months after the colour revolution
nothing much has changed - except that the West has installed its government,
which is anti-Russian. This is a dubious success and it begs the question of
the necessity of the USA-backed coup d'Etat in February of last year.
Expressed in a different way, all this destruction and the chaos could have
been avoided for Ukraine, if there would have been a constitutional transition
of power, as it was agreed upon with Yanukovich, by which there would have
been new elections - instead of a putsch by the USA and her allies. ..

.. Meanwhile, on the second anniversary of the US-Russian confrontation over
Ukraine, which began in November 2013, the crisis of the American-backed
government in Kiev continues to deepen economically and political. In recent
local elections, President Poroshenko's coalition seems to have won barely 20
percent of the vote while ultra-nationalist parties made gains in Western and
Central Ukraine, and perhaps even in Kiev itself.
Cohen cites reports that important decisions in Kiev-governed Ukraine are
being made by, or cleared with, the American ambassador in consultation with
Vice President Joseph Biden. If so, Cohen concludes, Kiev is increasingly
taking on the appearance of an American colony, for which Washington is now
politically responsible. Chances to end the US-Russian proxy war in Ukraine,
through the Minsk accords proposed by German Chancellor Merkel and French
President Hollande, are therefore also being squandered - by Kiev and its
backers in Washington. ..

UKRAINIAN SECRET SERVICE ACCUSED OF TRADING IN STOLEN DUTCH PAINTINGS

Posted on Dec 7, 2015 by Janene Pieters

Members of the Ukrainian secret service SBU played a role in trying to trade
the paintings stolen from the Westfries Museum in 2005, stolen art expert
Arthur Brand revealed in the press conference about the stolen paintings in
the museum on Monday, NOS reports.

On Monday morning the museum announced that the 24 stolen paintings were
traced to a Ukrainian militia <http://is.gd/olR0TT>, which is trying to sell
them for a large amount of money. The museum called in Brand to help negotiate
for the return of the paintings after attempts through the international
police organization Interpol failed.

Brand traveled to Ukraine and spoke with representatives of the militia. ..
Brand offered the militia an amount of money on behalf of the municipality of
Hoorn, but never got any response. The municipality also asked the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs to try and retrieve the art through diplomatic channels, but
this too was without success.

"Later I heard from well-informed sources that the leader of the Ukrainian
right-wing party Svoboda was in charge behind the scenes", Brand said at the
press conference, according to NOS. "The name Velntyn Valvaichenko was also
regularly dropped. That is the former leader of the Ukrainian secret service.
(OS: Nalyvaichenko. Former SBU head and a prominent Nazi, close friend of the
Right Sector's Yarosh.) I can not make everything public, but a connection
between the stolen art and the secret service is therefore more than likely.
Especially because members of the service are at least involved."

According to the museum director Ad Geerdink, their first priority is to get
the art back before it disappears again or gets damaged even more. "We have
done everything we can and are now at a dead end. Now that the works of art
seem to be at the point of disappearing again, we want to sound the alarm", he
said in a statement on the museum's website. "To let potential buyers know
that they are dealing with stolen art and to also give a true picture on the
artworks' actual value."

Photos of every painting involved in this case can be seen on the museum's
website <http://wfm.nl/gestolen-kunst/>.

Aussie Police, Dutch Prosecutors Break with Dutch Gov't Over MH17 Crash

By John Helmer

The Australian Federal Police and Dutch police and prosecutors investigating
the cause of the crash of Malaysian Airlines MH17 believe the Dutch Safety
Board (DSB) has failed to provide "conclusive evidence" of what type of
munition destroyed the aircraft, causing the deaths of 283 passengers and 15
crew on board.

.. international investigators are unconvinced by reports from the US and
Ukrainian governments, and by the DSB, of a Buk missile firing. "Dutch
prosecutors require conclusive evidence on other types of missile, .. initial
information that the aircraft was shot down by a [Buk] surface to air missile"
did not meet the Australian or international standard of evidence. ..

Australian police calls for Ukrainian witnesses on the ground, who may have
seen or heard what happened on the fateful day .. Some of those who came
forward to testify refused to do so .. unless the Australian and Dutch police
protected them in "a safe location"; excluded Ukrainian government officials;
and kept the identities of the witnesses secret. ..

A prominent Polish opposition politician visited Crimea in December.

"Polish MP doesn't find opponents of Crimea's reunification with Russia
during his visit"

Here's what he has written in his blog <https://archive.is/03rFH>:

A half of those whom I questioned in Crimea say it's much better now,
and another half say it's a little better or the same. Not worse, anyway.
And here I am in a Crimean Tatar restaurant (photo).

Here's Polish official nervous reaction <http://tinyurl.com/pq29quf>
(accompanied by a fake photo intended to show incredible militarist horrors
of the Crimean life after 'annexation'):

The Polish Foreign Ministry called the conduct by Janusz Korwin-Mikke a
Polish citizen and Member of the European Parliament, who visited the
Autonomous Republic of Crimea without consent of the competent Ukrainian
authorities, 'highly irresponsible'.
Eurosceptic Janusz Korwin-Mike, one of the most pro-Russian politicians
in Poland, flew to Crimea from Warsaw via Moscow. .. His aim was to get to
the bottom of the situation on the peninsula. ..

Mr. Korwin-Mike is not pro-Russian, he is a right-wing Polish nationalist
and a libertarian conservative politician known for his eccentric manners
and provokative speech. <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Janusz_Korwin-Mikke>

Statement of Jews of Crimea

12.25.15, Moscow - Simferopol, AEN (Exclusive) - The Jewish News Agency has
received this statement of the Jewish organizations of Crimea in connection
with the speech of the President of the Ukraine Pyotr Parashenko in the
Knesset of Israel (OS: http://qr.de/9sG ).

The statement has signed by the Crimean Jewish Congress (OS: http://acjc.ru ),
Simferopol and Yalta Jewish ethnic-cultural autonomies, the Jewish community
of Sevastopol, the Simferopol community of the Orthodox Judaism, the regional
department of Progressive Judaism of borough of Kerch. The statement says as
follows.

"December 23 this year, the President of the Ukraine Pyotr Poroshenko gave a
speech in one of the most respected parliaments of the world - the Knesset of
Israel. In his speech, he "expressed concern" about rights of the 17,000 Jews
in Crimea and about "threat of reprisals" for the Jewish community.

Jewish organizations of Crimea firmly state that these allegations are false
and nothing but a clumsy and feeble effort to distort the true picture of the
existing inter-ethnic peace and harmony in the Russian Crimea.

As you know, Crimea is a home for more than 170 ethnicities, one of which -
and this one is very important - is the Jews.

Mr. Poroshenko needs to know that we in Crimea feel calmness and confidence
for ourselves and our families. We don't have neither the anti-Semite
Banderovites here nor any far right militant units. In Crimea, there are no
the torchlight processions with swastikas, like at the Kristallnacht in 1938,
after which 30,000 Jews were sent to the concentration camps.

Today, we are under protection of the Russian state.

However, we love and remember the real true Ukraine, with all her national
colors, rich culture and hospitable people, - the Ukraine that was before the
present-day rampant nationalism and Banderovism.

Today, unfortunately, that Ukraine no longer exists. We know, many thousands
of the Jews, the Russians and other ethnicities have left the Ukraine in the
past two years. People don't run from a good life.

Meanwhile, over this time, tens of thousands of people fled from the Ukraine
to Crimea, because of persecutions on political and ethnic grounds.

What kind of anti-Semitism does Mr. Poroshenko speak about? Today in Crimea,
we have full support of our culture, traditions, holidays, and a number of key
positions in the power structures are occupied by the Jews. Historic buildings
are being returned to the Jews and monuments are being reconstructed.

Representatives of Crimea's leadership lit Hanukkah candles together with us.
Mr. Poroshenko, in the heat of the information warfare, doesn't want to notice
all this.

Mr. Poroshenko speaks about the Jews and the Crimean Tatars "with regret", and
at the same time - indeed, due to his "compassion" - he disables electricity,
bans importation of food and air traffic into Crimea, promises new
"blockades".

Mr. Poroshenko must understand and explain it to his colleagues and "friends",
that due to his efforts Crimea has now its own electricity and its own foods,
the aircraft are flying and millions of tourists are visiting. We, finally,
started to build normal roads.

And we have a lot of guests and friends.

The Jews in the Crimea were, are and will be! They are full members of the big
family of ethnicities of Crimea!"

Crimean Jews angry after Poroshenko says Russia instigating anti-Semitism
Local leaders call Ukrainian president's claims at Knesset false.
.. Asked about Russian accusations that his government is anti-Semitic,
Poroshenko told The Jerusalem Post last week he could not "react to Russian
propaganda." ..
.. "Poroshenko has no moral right to speak about the Jews of the Crimea, or he
does not know or does not want to know the actual situation," Elena
Raigorodskaya, spokeswoman for the All-Crimean Jewish Congress and the editor
of a local Jewish newspaper, told the Post. ..

Poroshenko is essentially a piece of shit, and the same is true for the main
part of the post-coup Ukrainian ruling clique - they all are impregnated with
a dense falsehood and perfidy.

.. In late November-early December, we visited Crimea. It was a week-long
business trip at invitation of Russian party. We were a small group of
representatives from four leading Israeli companies in the field of agro-
technologies. .. We were all amazed by what he saw. Beautiful land ..
Almost 20 years it was not cultivated, ruined gardens and vineyards. So
out of 100,000 hectares of the vineyards at the peak of the Soviet Union
today there are less than 15,000 hectares, that is one-seventh part. ..

General atmosphere in Crimea - we were in Simferopol and Yalta - is very
calm, people are definitely happy about the reunion with Russia. Towns are
clean, all is in a proper order. Undoubtedly, there's much to invest in
the development and infrastructure, especially in roads. Obviously, if you
were not investing in infrastructure for 20 years then everything falls
apart .. Israel certainly has much to offer to the region, our country is
recognized as a world leader in agro-technology, especially irrigation,
which is a very important issue for Crimea .. Israeli companies that have
recently visited Crimea say they are ready to go and work there ..

Ukraine's Looming "19 Fukushimas" Scenario

.. In the meantime, the Ukraine is in full-blown collapse - all five glorious
stages of it - setting the stage for a Ukrainian Nightmare Before Christmas,
or shortly after.

Phase 1. Financially, the Ukrainian government is in sovereign default as of
a couple of days ago. The IMF was forced to break its own rules in order to
keep it on life support even though it is clearly a deadbeat. In the process,
the IMF stiffed Russia, which happens to be one of its major shareholders;
what gives?

Phase 2. Industry and commerce are approaching a standstill and the country
is rapidly deindustrializing. Formerly, most of the trade was with Russia;
this is now over. The Ukraine does not make anything that the EU might want,
except maybe prostitutes. Recently, the Ukraine has been selling off its dirt.
This is illegal, but, given what's been happening there, the term "illegal"
has become the stuff of comedy.

Phase 3. Politically, the Ukrainian government is a total farce. Much of it
has been turned over to fly-by-night foreigners, such as the former Georgian
president Saakashvili, who is a wanted criminal in his own country, which has
recently stripped him of his citizenship. The parliament is stocked with
criminals who bought their seat to gain immunity from prosecution, and who
spend their time brawling with each other. Prime Minister Yatsenyuk was
recently hauled off the podium by his crotch; how dignified is that? He seemed
unfazed. Where are his testicles? Perhaps Victoria Nuland over at the US State
Dept. is keeping them in a jar. This sort of action may be fun to watch on
Youtube, but the reality is quite sad: those who "run" the Ukraine (if the
term still applies) are only interested in one thing: stealing whatever is
left.

Phase 4. Ukrainian society (if the term still applies) has been split into a
number of warring factions. This was, to some extent, inevitable. What happens
if you take bits of Poland, Hungary, Romania and Russia, and stick them
together willy-nilly? Well, results may vary; but if you also spend $5 billion
US (as the Americans did) turning the Ukrainians against Russia (and, since
they are mostly Russian, against themselves), then you get a complete
disaster.

Phase 5. Cultural collapse is quite advanced. The Ukraine once had the same
world-class educational system as Russia, but since independence they switched
to teaching in Ukrainian (a made-up language) using nonexistent textbooks. The
kids have been taught a bogus history hallucinated by rabid Ukrainian
nationalists. They've been told that Russia is backward and keeping them back,
and that they deserve to be happy in the EU. (Just like the Greeks? Yeah...)
But now the population has been reduced to levels of poverty not commonly seen
outside of Africa, and young people are fleeing, or turning to gangsterism and
prostitution, to merely survive. This doesn't make for a happy cultural
narrative. What does it mean to be "a Ukrainian" now? Expletives deleted.
Sorry I asked.

Now, here's what it all really means. With so much going wrong, the Ukraine
has been unable to secure enough natural gas or coal supplies to provide a
supply cushion in case of a cold snap this winter. .. the Ukraine produces
over half of its electricity using nuclear power plants. .. And this is in a
country whose economy is in free-fall ..

How close is Ukraine to a major nuclear accident? Well, it turns out, very
close: just recently one was narrowly avoided .. I hope that you know this
already, but, just in case, let me spell it out again. ..

And so the nightmare scenario for the Ukraine is a simple one. ..

Ukraine forgotten bankruptcy, chaos, and nuclear risk

Francesco Meneguzzo / December 23, 2015.

.. Returning to Ukraine, the result of two years of the crisis is nothing but
catastrophic and full of further risks, as it was not enough a year and a half
to make the hot conflict only partially cooled by shaky Minsk agreements (and,
from the hot areas , we receive reports of ongoing direct violations and also
heavy exchanges of artillery).

The gross domestic product of the country, at least according to the data of
the World Bank (controlled by the US), have decreased by 6.8% in 2014, it will
start this year to score a huge decline of 12%.

Within a few next days, having failed to pay back $3 billion to Russia in
previous sovereign debt, Kiev is technically bankrupt. Despite this, and
contrary to its own rules, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) - led by
Christine Lagarde, who is under investigation in France for corruption in
relation to the time when she was the finance minister - the Ukrainian
government has granted additional funding lines going to magnify even the
national debt.

Despite the free trade agreement signed with the European Union, refusal to
which did cost defenestration to Yanukovych, there are still no Ukrainian
products that can be marketed in the EU, not least because they do not meet
the standards required. .. The Ukrainian industrial apparatus goes
disintegrating and could block almost complete lack of jobs and lack of access
to international markets for spare parts because of financial difficulties.

Politically, the Ukrainian government is now an embarrassing farce. While some
positions have been awarded to foreign personalities .. a group of oligarchs
in fact controls the country .. Meanwhile, government and parliament meetings
in Kiev almost daily are accompanied by fierce fights and surreal accusations
..

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian society appears transversely split between different
ethnic groups, Polish, Hungarian, Romanian and Russian .. Poverty, as well as
corruption at all levels, have become endemic, wages have fallen dramatically,
the petty crime and prostitution are often the only way for young people to
procure the means of livelihood.

Because of financial difficulties, the default on the debt to Russia -
supplier of almost all the natural gas - and the loss of access to major coal
seams in Donbas, the Ukraine is facing a severe energy deficit. Basically,
stocks of both gas and coal are at their lowest, and only thanks to a
particularly mild winter so far has reduced the consumption ..

It should be known that half of the electricity in the country is generated
by nuclear power, through four major plants for a total of 15 reactors. Each
reactor needs to be continuously cooled to prevent melting, and this can only
be guaranteed by the continuity of the electricity service. .. it is not
difficult to imagine what would happen if it were missing sufficient fuel ..

revolution and that it was in vain-however one wishes to characterize it. ..
Unfortunately, that nascent revolution was hijacked by neo-fascist elements
that infiltrated the Maidan protests, overthrew the government, and then were
themselves infiltrated and largely overcome by, and subordinated to several
key oligarchs. Not surprisingly, corruption has increased rather than
decreased, European integration has stalled, and authoritarianism not just in
corridors of power but on the streets under the yoke of roaming bands of
neo-fascist groups seeking to foment a second, truly 'national revolution.' ..

Poroshenko is unpopular in every mega-region of Ukraine-west, east, north,
south, and central-with catastrophic, indeed 'revolutionarily' low popularity
ratings in the south and east (not including Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk no
less) at 11 percent in the east and 7 percent in the south. In Ukraine's
central and northern regions (the former includes Kiev), barely as many
Ukrainians approve of Poroshenko (21 percent) as approved of Yanukovych (20
percent) in 2013 on the eve of the Maidan revolt.
In sum, the Poroshenko's Maidan regime is less popular within the polity it
rules than Yanukovych's was in that which he ruled and which was overthrown by
a pseudo-revolution or revolt backed as a democratic revolution then and now
by the Barack Obama administration and the West's other governments. The
country has more in common with Wiemar Germany and 'post-Sovietistan' than a
Western democracy. ..

Ukrainian President Poroshenko's approval rating drops below ousted
predecessor's
Published time: 28 Dec, 2015

President Petro Poroshenko is currently less popular with the Ukrainian people
than his predecessor Viktor Yanukovich was just before being ousted in an
armed coup almost two years ago, a Gallup poll showed.

Poroshenko's approval rating dropped from 47 percent a few months after his
election in May 2014 to just 17 percent after a year in office, the polling
company reported <https://archive.is/az2kw>. When Yanukovich was forced to
leave office by armed crowds in February 2014, his performance was approved of
by 20 percent of Ukrainians. (OS: Along with that, majority still supported
the government decision to postpone the EU association. To better understand
the pre-coup situation in the Ukraine one should know that Yanukovich with his
20 percent approval rating was still the most popular and mainstream figure
among other politicians and parties in the Ukraine.)

In Eastern regions still under Kiev's control roughly 11 percent of people
polled approve of Poroshenko's work as president. The rating dropped even
lower in the south, where just 7 percent said the president was doing a good
job. Approval ratings were around 22 percent elsewhere in the country.

Despite his poor performance in the polls, Poroshenko is not yet the
least-approved-of president of Ukraine as recorded by Gallup. Yanukovich's
predecessor, Viktor Yushchenko, who came to power in the wake of mass riots in
Kiev in 2004, had a rating of just 7 percent in 2009, when his term was about
to expire. Yanukovich came to power the following year with a 46 percent
approval rating, much like Poroshenko had near the start of his term.

The low approval of the current president is still better than that of the
government of Prime Minster Arseny Yatsenyuk, which is supported by 8 percent
of the population, down from 24 percent in 2014. It is also one of the lowest
trust levels Gallup has recorded in Ukraine since 2006.

Nine in 10 Ukrainians think their government is 'rife with corruption,' with
only 5 percent believing enough is being done to fight problems in this area.
The figure is similar to the 6 percent who said this in 2013 before the coup
in Kiev.

Just 19 percent of Ukrainians say their government is taking the country in
the right direction, with 65 percent saying the opposite is true. By
comparison, only 5 percent said the leadership was headed in the right
direction under Yushchenko in 2009, the lowest figure on record.

Gallup conducted the poll in July and August and excluded the rebel-held
regions of Donetsk and Lugansk, which account for approximately 2 percent of
the Ukrainian adult population. Citizens of Crimea, which rejoined Russia
following the coup in 2014, did not participate in the poll either.

The current Ukrainian authorities came to power on the promise of distancing
the country from Russia and integrating with the European Union. Over the
almost two years they have been in power, they have managed to significantly
cut trade with Russia while failing to increase exports to other nations. They
have also cut social benefits and hiked the cost of utilities in order to
secure loans from the International Monetary Fund, and have de facto defaulted
on Ukraine's $3 billion debt to Russia.

Either mistake or typo, - according to the Wikipedia, the
population of 'the rebel-held regions of Donetsk and Lugansk'
is about 4 mln <http://vurl.com/n5114> <http://vurl.com/o211z>,
which gives about 10% against the current Ukraine population
under Kiev control (~ 40 mln).

Despite the fact that 'the rebel-held region' is rather small
in terms of territory, it includes pretty large - in terms of
population - urban agglomeration of Donetsk and its environs.

Reality Peeks Through in Ukraine

Exclusive: With corruption rampant and living standards falling, Ukraine may
become the next failed state that "benefited" from a neoconservative-driven
"regime change," though the blame will always be placed elsewhere - in this
case, on the demonized Russian President Putin, writes Robert Parry.
By Robert Parry / January 6, 2016

Nearly two years since U.S. officials helped foment a coup in Ukraine - partly
justified by corruption allegations - the country continues to wallow in graft
and cronyism as the living standards for average Ukrainians plummet, according
to economic data and polls of public attitudes. .. More and more Ukrainians
rate corruption as a major problem facing the nation, including a majority of
53 percent last September, up from 48 percent last June and 28 percent in
September 2014, according to polls by International Foundation for Electoral
Systems. ..

In many ways, the Ukraine crisis represents just another failure of
neocon-driven "regime change," which has also spread chaos across the Middle
East and northern Africa. .. In the West's mainstream media, these
developments were widely hailed as a noble "revolution" and - with lumps in
their throats - many journalists averted their misty eyes from the key role
played by unsavory neo-Nazis .. Ever since, the major U.S. news media has
stayed fully on board, ignoring evidence that what happened was a
U.S.-sponsored coup. The MSM simply explains all the trouble as a case of
naked "Russian aggression." .. That was, in effect, American propaganda and,
as clever as it was, it could only control reality for so long. ..

MH-17's Unnecessary Mystery

Robert Parry / January 15, 2016

Exclusive: Nearly 18 months after Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 crashed in
eastern Ukraine, one of the troubling mysteries is why the U.S. government -
after rushing to blame Russia and ethnic Russian rebels - then went silent,
effectively obstructing the investigation into 298 deaths, writes Robert
Parry.

.. Immediately after the crash, senior Obama administration officials showed
no hesitancy in pointing fingers at the ethnic Russian rebels who were then
resisting a military offensive by the U.S.-backed Kiev regime. On July, 20,
2014, Secretary of State John Kerry appeared on TV talk shows claiming there
was a strong circumstantial case implicating the rebels and their Russian
backers in the shoot-down.

After mentioning some information gleaned from "social media," Kerry said on
NBC's "Meet the Press" <https://archive.is/yKnfh>: "But even more importantly,
we picked up the imagery of this launch. We know the trajectory. We know where
it came from. We know the timing. And it was exactly at the time that this
aircraft disappeared from the radar."

Two days later, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence released a
"Government Assessment," also citing "social media" ..

The DNI also had U.S. intelligence analysts brief a few select mainstream
reporters, but the analysts conveyed much less conviction than their superiors
may have wished, indicating that there was still great uncertainty about who
was responsible. ..

Remember that just three days after the crash, Secretary Kerry had said U.S.
intelligence detected the launch and "We know where it came from."

But last October, the Dutch Safety Board still hadn't pinned down anything
like a precise location. The report could only place the launch site within a
320-square-kilometer area in eastern Ukraine, covering territory then
controlled by both Ukrainian and rebel forces. ..

So, with the firing location a key point in dispute, why would the U.S.
government withhold from a NATO ally (and investigators into a major airline
disaster) the launch point for the missile? Presumably, if the Obama
administration had solid evidence showing that the launch came from rebel
territory, which was Kerry's insinuation, U.S. officials would have been only
too happy to provide the data.

A reasonable conclusion from the failure to share this information with the
Dutch investigators is that the data does not support the preferred U.S.
government narrative. If there's a different explanation for the silence, the
Obama administration has failed to provide it. ..

Paul Moreira gives a distorted view of the Ukrainian conflict
THE WORLD | 01/31/2016 at 1:27 p.m. . Updated 01.02.2016 at 10:57 |
By Benedict Vitkine

...

The writer is a Le Monde's scribbler that specializes in writing various
nonsense about East Europe and Russia. He was among those actively promoted a
distorted view about the anti-constitutional coup in Kiev. It's understandable
the scribblers of the sort feel unhappy when the reality does not fit to their
false narratives.

Wrong' Maidan: Ukraine demands that France's Canal+ TV take hard-hitting
documentary off air / Published time: 1 Feb, 2016 08:26 ...
The filmmaker, Paul Moreira, has responded to the accusations, saying his film
was "contrary to the commonly accepted narrative" but the reaction still
shocked him.

"I knew I was going to meet a strong opposition, would be accused of playing
into the hands of Putin, of using elements of propaganda. I didn't expect to
meet such denial, bordering on hysteria. I was called a 'terrorist' in the pay
of the Russian secret services. [They are] urging that the film be banned.
"Even the Ukrainian ambassador pressured Canal Plus. That is what surprises me
the most. For it seems to me that Ukraine must urgently raise the question of
these paramilitary groups. They are, as stated in the film, the greatest
threat to Ukrainian democracy."

...

As I stated from the very beginning, the protesting Maidan crowd was driven
mainly by a naive national-socialist sentiment. If the new freaks in Kiev take
a strong stance against 'these paramilitary groups' then they finally lose the
remnants of public support to the post-coup regime. Their public ratings are
already extremely low. The Western zealots of the liberal interventionism
promoted false narratives to justify the ugly 'revolution'. Now they refuse to
recognize their moral bankruptcy, but sooner or later they'll have to do that.

Russian Congress of Canada: 'Respect the decision of the Crimean people to
rejoin Russia'

BY ROGER ANNIS AND RENFREY CLARKE | MARCH 18, 2016

Statement here on RCC website <http://russiancongresscanada.ca/>

TORONTO -- Two years ago on March 16, 2014, the people of Crimea voted
overwhelmingly in favour of secession from Ukraine and applying to join the
Russian Federation. Their application to join Russia was quickly accepted.

The secession decision was immediately condemned by governments in Europe,
North America and elsewhere in the world. It was labeled an "annexation" by
Russia accompanied by a Russian military intervention. Harsh economic and
other sanctions were imposed against the territory and population of Crimea
and its political leaders. Equivalent sanctions were imposed on Russia.

The claim of "annexation" does not accurately describe the events as they
occurred in Crimea, nor is it shared by the overwhelming majority of the
people of the peninsula. Two years later, we believe it is time for sober,
second thought in the West on the Crimean events and it is well-nigh time that
the punishing and unfair sanctions be lifted.

Two reasons explain why the Crimean people voted as way they did in March
2014. One, they viewed with alarm the events taking place in the Ukrainian
capital of Kiev and elsewhere in that country in late 2013 and early 2014. The
Ukrainian government was overthrown on February 22, 2014, by a violent,
extra-constitutional movement. The overthrow came days after a political
agreement brokered by the European Union was reached that would have seen an
early presidential election convened as well as other measures responding
fairly to the protesters on Maidan Square.

Let us recall that the elected President Yanukovych who was overthrown on
February 22 received a strong majority of the votes case in Crimea in the
second-round presidential vote in Ukraine on February 7, 2010.

Two, the status of Crimea as an autonomous republic of Ukraine was never a
free choice of the people there. Crimea was attached to the Ukrainian Soviet
Republic by administrative decision of the Soviet Union in 1954. Following
Ukraine's accession to independence in 1991, during the transition from the
Soviet Union, several efforts to establish an independent Crimea were
rebuffed, and not only by the new Ukrainian authorities but also by the
Russian authorities of the day. After much struggle and contestation, Crimea
became the "Autonomous Republic of Crimea." It was the only territory in
Ukraine to acquire an autonomous, status, a constitutional status, no less. It
was the duly elected assembly of that republic which conducted the secession
vote of March 16, 2014.

Poll after poll of the Crimean people following secession has shown high rates
of satisfaction with decision, including among Crimeans of Ukrainian descent.

Euromaidan unmasked: Europe shocked by the bitter truth on Ukraine

By ORIENTAL REVIEW | Wed, Feb 3, 2016

The hard-hitting documentary by Paul Moreira "Ukraine, les masques de la
révolution" [Ukraine: Masks of the Revolution], released
<http://bit.ly/1cP8Sg5> on Monday night by Canal+, created a turmoil both in
Ukraine and France well before the premiere. On Sunday the Ukrainian Foreign
Ministry reported in Facebook <http://durl.me/bdxhr9> that their Ambassador in
France had sent an outraged letter to Canal+ where he condemned the
documentary as a "a pamphlet at the height of the worst disinformation
traditions" "using primitive methods of journalistic manipulation, including
the handling of comments of respondents, distorted in translation and facts
and purely fabricated images". The same day Le Monde doubled the pressure on
Canal+. <http://bit.ly/1KqXYTL> Paul Moreira has calmly and respectfully
responded to his critics by a detailed post translated into English here.
<http://bit.ly/1RbOVHU> To the credit of Canal Plus' management, the
documentary was screened in time:

Please watch it attentively. And let's try to understand why it has infuriated
so much the official Kiev.

To be fair, the masterpiece did not reveal anything new. So far there were a
lot of separate investigations by international organizations, NGOs, concerned
individuals etc on different aspects of the "Revolution of Dignity": who
actually killed the "heavenly hundred" <http://bit.ly/1X9J1Yq>, what happened
in Odessa in May 2014 <http://bit.ly/20yDVdu>, what is going on in the zone of
"anti-terrorist operation" <http://bit.ly/1PYUyUu> in the South-East of
Ukraine, where are the "Russian troops" <http://bit.ly/1K0GERo> and where are
the Western mercenaries there <http://bit.ly/23OYl19> . But most of them were
successfully ignored by the mainstream Western media, stick to their
comfortable myths about Euromaidan.

The principal danger of Paul Moreira heartbreaking 50-minutes long documentary
is that it exposed all critically important lies and silenced facts about
"Revolution of Dignity" and its agents in a concentrated form at the
established French TV channel.

Paul Moreira did not do anything but showed a simple and honest truth - there
was no dignity in that "revolution". There is no "free civilizational choice"
and "independent and legitimate authorities" in today's Ukraine. There are
gangsters licensed to kill and rob, psychopaths and criminals in the
"democratic parliament", parallel Nazi-inspired army, foreign officials who
manipulate the political process in a sovereign country, media under total
nationalist control etc. His argumentation and picture are so evident,
eloquent and bright that there is no reasonable way to refute them. Here is
the cause of hysteria and calls to ban (which paradoxically has triggered
unprecedented public attention to the movie far beyond France) - they
understand that an open and fair discussion would lead further undesirable
revelations against the interim rulers in Kiev.

One more pleasant outcome of this story is that the rumors about clinical
death of the independent journalism in the West are apparently somewhat
exaggerated.
